Jackson Pollock’s Painting #5: $140 million

Jackson Pollock is a firm reminder to every artist in the world: never give up. His style is far from unique but it is definitively his own in the world of pop art. Perhaps more than anything Pollock is a reminder of the true subjectivity of artwork. In any event one of his paintings, the #5, 1948, ended up getting sold for a rock solid $140 million. If you are the kind of person to go gaga over artwork then you probably want to start scraping pennies together now. Or you could just put a canvas in front of your toddler and hand them a few different colors of paint. Either way you are likely to get something resembling Pollock’s work to hang up above your Ikea brand furniture. Just don’t say we didn’t tell you so when people ‘don’t get it’.

The Card Players Painting: $260 million.

There is a true disparity in both the high end and low end of art work value. When my kid scribbles something on the paper it is worthless. Garbage, really. When French artiste Paul Cezzane paints two men playing cards at a table, well, it’s worth $260 million in cool cash. The Royal Family of Al Thani, located in Qatar, spent that small fortune to purchase this painting. Good for them, right?
