“Titanic” and “Avatar” are two of director James Cameron’s most successful films, but “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” released in 1991, is his highest-grossing R-rated film. The $206 million domestic total for “T2” was earned over many theatrical releases, but it was a big hit right away. In 1991, the highest-grossing film in the world was by far — regardless of MPAA rating — and it is currently the most profitable installment in the long-running Terminator franchise.
