‘A Star Is Born’ (2018)

Domestic Gross: $215.3 million

“A Star Is Born,” the highest-grossing musical on this list — and one of the few R-rated musicals ever made — grossed more than $215 million despite never being the most successful film at the box office during its run. Director Bradley Cooper and his co-star, Lady Gaga, had incredible chemistry in this story about a self-destructive artist and his protégé. In addition to grossing a lot of money, “A Star Is Born” was one of the best-received films of the year, winning an Oscar.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998)

Domestic Gross: $217 million

Over the years, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have collaborated on four films; the most famous of “Saving Private Ryan” in 1998. Regardless of its MPAA rating, this World War II hit, which featured a gruesome and dramatic reenactment of the D-Day landings in Normandy, was the highest-grossing film in America 1998. Perhaps more surprising is how well “Saving Private Ryan” did with international audiences, who contributed an additional $265 million to the film’s total worldwide gross.
